Zaïko had no ancestors to bless him and no legacy handed down to him. Hunger and gunfire were his only inheritance. Where others waited for fate, he carved his own path, rising from nothing until his name moved like thunder through the underworld. No one was left to crown him, so the streets crowned him themselves: the Leopard Phantom King.
His younger brother Zirofa chose another way. While Zaïko carried the rage of the land and grew heavy with scars, Zirofa learned to move like a whisper, surviving by cunning instead of fists. People call him Le Rusé, the cunning one.
Then come Kikwit SilQ, L’Intello, who chose silence and learned how to make an empire last, and Baku, the Silent Mountain, who never followed his brothers into crime but holds them all together.
Their mother Bolingo is the best friend of Kimoya. She carries a mother's love, sacrifice and memory, and the invisible battles mothers fight for their children.
For years the people of the Kivu waited for peace, for help, for someone else to fix it. It never came. So the two brothers stopped waiting and turned to take their city back from Rwagama. This is eastern Congo told from the inside, for everyone who ever asked: why us, why again, why still?
