Ngubani uSankuru?
“Fall down seven times, rise up eight. I am Sankuru, and I will never stop rising!”
Sankuru is a joyful, fearless warrior-child whose boundless energy comes from the sacred river that shares his name. He is a child of the forest, the river and the ancestors. Where others see limits, he sees a chance. Where others give up, he rises again, stronger and faster.
Inkangeleko yakhe
An orange gi covered in glowing Kongo glyphs, the golden emblem of Katiopa on his back, a woven river bracelet on his wrist, green-soled sneakers made for running and leaping, and a proud afro crown.
His friends
Zaiire is his big brother and his rival in training: they push each other beyond their limits. Zaiire carries the crown of destiny, Sankuru carries the spirit of freedom. Ndovu sees him as a playful little brother, Queen Beeza Wingara calls him Little Wing of Fire, and Jha Rastafa chants blessings over him.
What he means
Playful, curious, protective and fearless, Sankuru already defends the villages of the Sankuru River from invaders and predators. To the children of Katiopa, he is the hero they see in themselves: proof that every African child holds limitless power inside.
His name is also the name of the Sankuru River and the Sankuru province, in the heart of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
