ISOLELE Universe is an African comics universe created in Kinshasa by HRM King Kufulula, traditional King of the Bapindi people of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Its first title, Zaiire: The Prince of Kongo and the Necklace of Destiny, follows a young prince from Kinshasa whose inherited necklace connects him to the kings and queens of the Kongo Kingdom. The story blends Kongo history, African mythology and modern city life, and it has helped bring Congolese comics and African graphic novels into a wider conversation about who gets to tell African stories.
Journalists in the DRC and abroad have followed the project since its release. The Agence Congolaise de Presse has written about how a Congo comic can teach young readers the history of the Kongo Kingdom and the figures who shaped it, and covered Zaiire at SABDAM, the African comics festival in Kinshasa. Comics and news outlets in the United States and Ghana have described ISOLELE as an African superhero franchise built for a global audience, with Black superheroes whose faces, names and legends come from the continent itself.
This page gathers that coverage by story: ISOLELE in the Congolese media, Zaiire in the press, African superheroes in the global press, interviews with the Congolese creator behind the universe, and reporting on the Kongo and Bapindi heritage that inspires it. Each entry has a short note on what the article covers and a link to read it in full on the publisher's site.
