What is the Mask of Bapindi?
The Mask of Zaiire is no ordinary mask. It is the crown of crowns, said to be carved from the first light of the Sacred Flame and bound to the ancestral spirits of the Bapindi. Through it, Zaiire can summon, control and unite every African mask ever made: the masks of the Dogon of Mali, the Gelede of the Yoruba, the white masks of the Punu of Gabon, the initiation masks of the Chokwe of Angola.
When Zaiire wears it, enemies no longer see one warrior. They see centuries of guardians, kings, queens and spirits roaring through him.
The mask no one else can command
Mubutu’s Masque de Sese Seko gives him power over every mask in the world, except one. The Mask of Zaiire is the only mask he can never touch.
The price of the mask
So many voices can overwhelm even the strongest mind. Only the heir of the Bapindi and Makanda lines can use its full power, and if someone unworthy wears it, every mask turns against them. Each summoning drains Zaiire’s life force, and uniting all masks at once could burn him alive.
Its look
Golden ancestral metal forged in fire and riverstone, marked with Bapindi glyphs. Eyes of white-blue flame. A sacred lion’s mane. Lines painted in red, green, blue and white: each line a people, each dot an ancestor.
Makanisi ya bonkoko ya Afrika
The Bapindi, also called the Pende, are a people of the Democratic Republic of Congo famous for their masks. The Mask of Bapindi stands for unity through diversity: every tradition of Africa woven into one golden face.
