Who is Amarulaa Mbuta?
Amarulaa Mbuta is the Elephant Elder of the Congo, a living embodiment of wisdom, memory and endurance. His tusks glow with ivory light, carved with glyphs that tell the stories of forgotten kings and queens. His voice is deep thunder, and his footsteps shake the earth.
For Opa, Okapi and Ota Benga he is guide and protector, teaching that true strength lives not in force alone but in memory, patience and family.
Weaknesses
Knowing so much history weighs on him, and sorrow can slow his spirit. His power fades where trees and rivers have been destroyed. And his kind heart sometimes makes him hesitate when he should strike.
What he means
Amarulaa is the elephant as Africa’s eternal elder: memory that never dies, strength that endures, wisdom that guides. His tusks are libraries of time. For the Guardians of Kongo he is the reminder that no future can exist without honoring the past.
His name comes from the marula, the fruit tree of Africa’s savannas, much loved by elephants.
Appearances
Amarulaa Mbuta appears in The Guardians of Kongo: Okapi & Opa, The Sacred Bottle of Time of Ota Benga, the ISOLELE children’s comic book.
