Family

Who is Shango?

Shango is the Orisha of thunder, storms and divine judgment in the ISOLELE Universe. He is the beloved of Kimoya and the father of Zaiire, the Prince of Kongo.

He is power in its purest form: a crown of fire, lightning in his hand, a throne above the clouds. But the story of Shango is not only the story of a storm. It is the story of a father.

The birth of Zaiire

Zaiire was born in the daytime, during a thunderstorm on the banks of the Congo River, and his infant fist crackled with lightning. Kimoya gave him his name over the sacred waters: Zaiire, son of Shango, lord of storms and rains, born of thunder.

The storm did not leave. It now walks the Earth, in his son.

Shango and Kimoya

Before there was a prince, there was a queen and the master of the storm. Kimoya, the Kandake who made Rome tremble, and Shango, whose thunder shakes the heavens. Their love carries the bloodline at the heart of the ISOLELE Universe.

A father who never learned how

Shango was never taught how to be a father. It was his first time, and he was not there. His son grew up in the house of his uncle Zattar, carrying a question he never said out loud: did you ever really see me?

In a realm beyond time, Shango finally meets his son. They walk hand in hand beneath the ancient stars, and a king kneels before his own child to say the words he never said. That story is told in the book Shango and Zaiire: A Letter from a Father to His Son.

His look

A tall golden crown with a veil of white beads over his eyes. A great red coiled collar. Robes in red and white, the colors of Shango. Gold bands on his arms, bare feet on the clouds, and lightning that never stops moving around his hand.

African cultural inspiration

ISOLELE’s Shango is inspired by Shango (Ṣàngó), the Orisha of thunder and lightning of the Yoruba people of Nigeria and Benin, remembered as a king of the Oyo Empire. His colors are red and white. Across the Atlantic his name traveled with the enslaved: Xangô in Brazil, Changó in Cuba.

ISOLELE brings him into Central Africa, as father of the Prince of Kongo, joining the thunder of the Yoruba with the river and the royal memory of the Kongo.

Appearances

Shango is at the root of the Zaiire saga, from the birth of Zaiire in Book I. He is the heart of the book Shango and Zaiire: A Letter from a Father to His Son (Isolele Universe, 2026).

Shango is part of the ISOLELE Universe, the Congolese comic book universe created by HRM King Kufulula: Katiomics stories where African history and African folklore meet Afrofuturism and African futurism.
