Who is Zaiire?
Zaiire is the central hero of the ISOLELE Universe and one of the first Black African superheroes created in the Democratic Republic of Congo for a worldwide audience. He is the Crown Prince of Kongo, a Demi-God born to Shango, the lord of thunder and storms, and to Kimoya, a warrior queen of the Kongo royal bloodline. The name ISOLELE means "the chosen one" in Kikongo, and Zaiire is the hero the universe is named for.
Zaiire is not born a hero. He is born chosen. For most of his childhood he does not know who he really is, and the discovery of his royal blood unfolds slowly across his books. That is what makes him different from many Western superheroes: his power is not an accident, an experiment or a gadget. It is an inheritance, and every step he takes toward it is also a step back toward the history of the Kongo Kingdom.
Origin
Zaiire was separated from his mother when he was four years old. He woke up in a car wearing half of an ancient necklace, with no memory of why he had been sent away. He grew up in Kinshasa in the house of his uncle Zattar, surrounded by wealth and prestige on the outside, and raised alongside Zattar's son Dawidi as if they were brothers.
Everything changes when Zaiire goes to find his mother in one of the poorest neighborhoods of Kinshasa. Kimoya places the second half of the Necklace of Destiny in his hands and then disappears. The necklace awakens him. What began as a son looking for his mother becomes a much larger journey: a search that takes him across the Congo, into the Kongo cosmogram and out into the cosmos, where he learns that the forces trying to erase Kongo history are not finished.

Kingdom and world
Zaiire belongs to the Kingdom of Kongo, one of the great kingdoms of Central African history. His story starts in Kinshasa, in the district of Isolele, an imagined city that brings together famous buildings from across Africa in one skyline. From there his adventures reach the sacred forests of the Congo, the Kongo cosmogram and Kakongo, the cosmic origin point of the ancient Lyran bloodline.
African cultural inspiration
Zaiire was created by HRM King Kufulula, traditional King of the Bapindi people, who wanted African children to see a hero with their own faces, hair, names and history. The character draws on the history of the Kongo Kingdom, on Kongo cosmology and its cosmogram, on the Congo River, and on Shango, the thunder deity whose worship crossed the Atlantic with the African diaspora.
Zaiire's story also brings real historical figures into his path, including Patrice Lumumba, Kimpa Vita and Ganga Zumba, so that readers meet African history through the eyes of a young hero rather than in a textbook.
First appearance
Zaiire first appears in Zaiire: The Prince of Kongo and the Necklace of Destiny, Book I of his saga, released on April 3, 2025. The book reached the bestseller shelf of an independent bookstore in Nairobi and is distributed in Zambia and South Africa, and it has been covered by the Congolese and international press.
