Who is Ôta Benga?
Ôta Benga was a child of the forest, a young Mbuti of the Congo whose life was stolen when he was captured and taken into exile. In the ISOLELE Universe his story goes beyond tragedy: he becomes the Guardian of Memory, bound inside the Sacred Bottle of Time.
Only the chosen can see him: Okapi, Opa from the future and Amarulaa Mbuta the elder. Through them, his spirit rises again, carrying the memory of Africa’s stolen children.
What he means
Ôta Benga stands for memory, injustice and resilience: every stolen child, every lost name, every silenced voice, and the promise that memory will never die. He is both prisoner and prophet, waiting for the day Africa reclaims its children.
The real Ôta Benga
The story honors a real man. Ota Benga, a Mbuti from the Congo, was taken to the United States in 1904 and put on display, first at the World’s Fair in St. Louis and then at the Bronx Zoo in New York in 1906, until Black clergymen fought to free him. He died in Virginia in 1916, far from his forest. ISOLELE gives him back his crown.
Appearances
