Who is Mokele?

Mokele is a man from the poorest neighborhoods of Kinshasa who rises from street survivor to the most feared name in the city. He can make anything he draws become real, and he can transform into a tiger. Known as the Lord of Kinshasa and the Street Emperor of Kinshasa, he is the lead of his own series, MOKELE, set in the Kinshasa of 2040.

Mokele was not born a king. He was born into struggle, in the bidonvilles of Kinshasa, where the streets taught him before school ever could, where loyalty was fragile, violence was normal and survival was everything.

The wound

His life was shaped by one wound. As a child, he watched his father beat his mother while the family went hungry. When his father abandoned them, Mokele was sixteen, and he stepped up to protect her. He did not choose the streets out of ambition. He chose them out of necessity, so that his mother would never have to beg again.

He watched the city swallow men stronger than him and understood the only truth that mattered: in Kinshasa, you either get eaten, or you become the predator. From child to hustler to Prince of the Streets, Mokele built what no one gave him, brick by brick, betrayal by betrayal, until his name became something the city whispered in fear. No one crowned him. The streets crowned him themselves.

The Empire

By 2040, Mokele sits at the top of a Kinshasa of speed and excess. He owns a palace guarded by lion statues, a fleet of cars, and a place in the world of Formula racing, the legitimate face of an empire built in the shadows. At night he sits alone in his leopard chair among scattered money and empty glasses, knowing that everyone wants wealth and no one wants what it truly costs.

His crew is his family. Fatshi, his most loyal man, is the one who comes to tell him the city is ready. Sikiliza, his closest friend since the days by the river, is the brother the streets gave him.

The Living Drawing

Mokele's power is written in his hands. Whatever he draws becomes real. A line on paper becomes a wall. A sketch becomes a weapon, a door, a way out. For a boy who grew up with nothing, it is the most dangerous gift of all: the power to create anything, and the question of what a man should create when he can have everything.

The Two Tigers

On the stone steps of his palace, Mokele draws two tigers in his notebook, and they come to life. One builds, the other protects what was built. One wants to protect, the other wants to destroy. They have lived inside him since childhood. Mokele's journey is learning to know both natures, not to choose one, but to know which one to send at the right moment.

The Tiger

When the battle calls for it, Mokele becomes the tiger. The man in the suit disappears, and in his place stands the predator the streets always saw in him: silent, patient, watching, and devastating when provoked. The tiger is not a mask he puts on. It is the truth of what Kinshasa made him.

The Voice of Mokele

Mokele does not preach. He testifies. When he speaks, it is calm, like a man transmitting knowledge from someone who has seen both the bottom and the top. Every word is meant to leave the listener with something to keep.

His code: Article 15

Mokele lives by Article 15, the famous Congolese expression meaning "fend for yourself," the survival code of Kinshasa.

Cultural inspiration

Mokele is rooted in the real street culture of Kinshasa, including the kuluna street gangs and the city's survival code, Article 15. The character explores how poverty, family violence and ambition shape a man, telling a Congolese story of power, money, loyalty and betrayal in the tradition of the great crime sagas, from an African point of view.

In his own words

"A man becomes great the day he accepts that he alone is responsible for what he becomes."

Mokele is part of the ISOLELE Universe, the Congolese comic book universe created by HRM King Kufulula: Katiomics stories where African history and African folklore meet Afrofuturism and African futurism.
