Who is Okapi Nkosi?
Okapi Nkosi is the young Guardian of the forest, a child of mystery and innocence chosen by the ancestral spirits of the Congo. With his zebra-striped legs and deer-like body, he is a living symbol of the hidden and the revealed. Playful and curious at first, he discovers that he is one of the few who can see the Bottle of Time where Ôta Benga’s soul was trapped.
He is the heart of the Guardians: innocent, brave and pure, the one who reminds the others of hope.
Weaknesses
His innocence can be deceived, he is smaller than his companions in battle, and the visions of the Bottle of Time can overwhelm him.
What he means
The okapi was long thought to be a myth, yet it lives in the Congo’s forests. Okapi stands for Africa’s children: often overlooked, yet carrying the weight of ancestral destiny. Through him, the Guardians learn that greatness is the courage to see what others cannot.
The okapi is the national animal of the Democratic Republic of Congo and lives only in its rainforests, especially in the Ituri.
