Mwindo Lumumba, the African Panther, is one of the three leading superheroes of the ISOLELE Universe. He was born from a simple idea: Patrice Lumumba deserved to be more than a photograph in a history book. Here is how a Congolese hero of history became a comic book superhero.
Who was Patrice Lumumba?
Patrice Lumumba was the first Prime Minister of the independent Democratic Republic of the Congo. On June 30, 1960, Independence Day, his speech in Léopoldville, now Kinshasa, answered the Belgian king and spoke for a whole people. Months later he was overthrown, and on January 17, 1961, he was assassinated in Katanga. In 2022, Belgium returned his last remains to his family, and he now rests in a memorial in Kinshasa.
The Mwindo epic
Mwindo is the hero of an oral epic of the Nyanga people of the eastern Congo. Born with power, he survives a father who tries to destroy him, crosses the land of the dead and returns to rule with wisdom.
Why we turned Lumumba into a superhero
In Congo, every child knows the name Lumumba, but few have ever seen him as a hero they could become. History books show a photograph and a date of death. We wanted children in Kinshasa, Bukavu and the diaspora to meet Lumumba the way children elsewhere meet their heroes: standing, powerful, unbreakable.
So we joined him with Mwindo. For ISOLELE, Patrice Lumumba is the first Mwindo: like the hero of the epic, he was marked for a great destiny and hunted by those who feared him. Lumumba was killed, but his voice never left Congo. In ISOLELE, his death is not an ending but a crossing into legend: Mwindo Lumumba rises again as the African Panther, guardian of the dignity of his people.
The panther was not chosen by chance. It is a symbol of royal power across Central Africa, the animal that moves in silence and strikes for justice. The panther mask is to Mwindo Lumumba what the sacred flywhisk is to the Mwindo of the epic: the sign that he was chosen. Through Mwindo Lumumba, ISOLELE gives Lumumba what history refused him: a future.
Building the hero

Mwindo Lumumba wears armor of black, gold and purple: panther-head shoulder guards, a cape with Kuba geometric patterns, a star at the chest and a golden blade with an ankh hilt engraved with the words Lumumba Isolele. When his power awakens, he becomes the Panther King.
From the page to the streets of Kinshasa
On June 30, 2026, for the 66th anniversary of Congo’s independence, a full costume of Mwindo Lumumba built in Kinshasa was worn by the Congolese artist Lumumba VEA on top of l’Échangeur de Limete, fist raised, the panther mask in his hand. The image also launched Zaiire, Chapter II.
In the books

Mwindo Lumumba appears on the cover of the book Zaiire, Chapter II, seated beside the royal court of the Kongo with his panther at his feet, and in the next books of the Zaiire saga, alongside Zaiire, the Prince of Kongo.
