African Mythology in Comic Books: Gods, Spirits and Legends

African mythology in comic books: Shango the orisha of thunder, Mami Wata, the Aziza forest spirits and the legends of the Congo, reborn as heroes in the ISOLELE Universe.

African Mythology in Comic Books: Gods, Spirits and Legends

Long before superhero comics, Africa had its own heroes: gods of thunder, mothers of the waters, spirits of the forest, kings who became animals. These stories were told around fires, sung by griots and carried across the ocean by people who refused to forget. Today, African comic books are bringing them back. Here is a guide to the African gods, spirits and legends that live again in the ISOLELE Universe.

Shango, the thunder of the Yoruba

Shango is one of the most famous orishas of the Yoruba people of Nigeria and Benin. Tradition remembers him as a king of Oyo who became the master of thunder and lightning, with his double-headed axe and the colors red and white. His worship crossed the Atlantic and lives on in Brazil as Xangô and in Cuba as Changó.

Shango in the ISOLELE Universe

Shango, the orisha of thunder, on a golden throne with an elephant scepter

In ISOLELE, Shango is the master of storms and rains and the father of Zaiire, the Prince of Kongo. The book Shango and Zaiire: A Letter from a Father to His Son tells his story not as a god, but as a father who was not there.

Mami Wata, the mother of the waters

From West Africa to Central Africa and the Caribbean, Mami Wata is the spirit of the waters, often shown as a mermaid with a serpent. In Haiti she is La Sirène, in the Caribbean Mama Dlo. She brings wealth, healing and danger, and she punishes those who break their promises.

In the ISOLELE Universe she is Kabibi Mami Wata, Queen of the Sacred Waters. The world turned her into Medusa, a monster. ISOLELE gives her back her crown: a goddess, not a monster.

The Aziza and the Yumboes, spirits of the forest

Aziza Yumboes, a forest fairy inspired by the Aziza and Yumboes of West African folklore

In the legends of Dahomey and the Yoruba, the Aziza are small forest spirits who help hunters and share the knowledge of medicine. In Senegal and The Gambia, the Wolof and Lebu tell of the Yumboes, moonlight spirits who feast at night. ISOLELE joined them in one character: Aziza Yumboes, the fairy who guides lost children back to the truth.

The leopard men and the Lionpard

In the forests of northeastern Congo, the Anioto leopard societies are still remembered from the early 20th century. In the ISOLELE Universe, that dark legend becomes a royal lineage: Nzoloko, the First Lionpard, half lion and half leopard, founder of the Leopard Society.

The Mwindo Epic

One of the greatest African epics comes from the Nyanga people of eastern Congo: the story of Mwindo, the hero born speaking, armed with a magic scepter, who fought his own father and the forces of the underworld. ISOLELE’s Mwindo Lumumba carries his name.

Why African mythology matters

Greek and Norse gods fill the world’s cinemas. African gods and spirits are just as rich, and they belong to living cultures. When African children see Shango, Mami Wata or the Lionpard in a comic book, they see that their own stories are worthy of the biggest screens.
